I love sharing my herbalism journey with others because people can generally find a connection point regarding their own stories, and maybe you can relate to my experiences. Health has been a critical part of my life since I was young. It started when my older sister was diagnosed with cancer (osteosarcoma) when I was 11 years old and she was 12. Shantelle had gone through 5 years of surgeries and chemotherapy, but the cancer kept coming back. She passed away when she was 17 years old. I became extremely distrustful and skeptical of our culture's practice of western medicine. I began noticing the over-prescribing of medications and the poor lifestyle habits of our society. After years of witnessing my sister suffer through all the medical treatments, after I was prescribed an anti-depressant/anti-anxiety medication (Zoloft) when I was 13 years old and feeling like a zombie because of it, AND after my doctor kept pushing me to take birth control pills all throughout my high school years, I realized that something was really wrong about our society's way of dealing with health problems.

When I was in college, I began seeking out alternative & holistic medicine, mostly in the form of plants - herbs & spices, natural foods, and even plant psychedelics. I was on a mission to find ways for dealing with stress, pain, inflammation, something that would help with my acne and menstrual cramps! During that time, I began to deeply question the basis of our medical system after a conversation with a doctor at my college's health clinic. I told her that I didn't want to take any medication for acne and had started to drink dandelion root tea to help with my skin issues. She responded, "You should be careful doing that because we don't have any long term studies to determine if that is safe or not." I immediately thought that there was something very wrong with our health system. Our ancestors were using plant medicines for thousands of years, yet modern medicine was disregarding any validity of ancient medicine practices unless there were long-term studies done. I sometimes would wonder, Where is all that knowledge and wisdom from our ancestors about the healing power of plants?

Through all of the experimentation on myself over the years with natural remedies - from lemon, ginger, and honey tea for colds to using raw garlic for yeast infections - I was finally understanding how humans can be in balance with their bodies by using the natural gifts our earth has to provide. Further, through my studies at school, I learned how evolutionary biology plays a big role in how our bodies are adapted to using the plants that grow around us. I no longer refilled my prescription of Naproxen for menstrual cramps, or used the harsh acne creams. I started learning more about nutrition and whole foods and started listening to the experts in the basics like exercise, sleep hygiene, stress management, brain health and everything in between. I thought, Wow, this is amazing! Why don't more people know about this?! I started taking online herbalism courses, then experimented in creating my own herbal medicine and using natural food and herbs to heal. A friend told me about an herbal apprenticeship program at Greenwood Herbals in Limerick, Maine, so I signed up! I loved all of the knowledge and magic so much that I immediately enrolled in the Clinical Herbalism Program. I received a certificate for Clinical Herbalism in the summer of 2024 and am using my education to help others find balance in their health. I am now offering herbal consultations to those in my community, and hope to help many people throughout my career.
